Bed Bath & Beyond’s Flagship store, located within the historic late-19th century Beaux-Arts building at 620 6th Avenue in New York City, needed a 21st-century reinvention. The corporate brief? Create a shopper-friendly environment that would mirror the residential sensibilities of the store’s lifestyle offerings.
VMAD synthesized that information in their architectural reimagining of the 92,000 square foot store. The firm reoriented the entry to beckon guests. Sightlines were lowered. Traffic patterns were established through the use of flooring materials. Expansive windows were uncovered to afford great natural light. Products were arranged at eye level for intimate access. And organic profiles were introduced to soften the rectilinear space.
VMAD’s conceptual planning, schematics, and architectural drawings were completed during the pandemic lockdown by coordinating a combined team of 6 individuals working in conjunction with the team at BB&B. Construction began in September 2020 and was completed in a record ten months, in time for the store’s reopening in July of 2021.
